Completed in 1804, the Peak Forest Canal was designed to connect the coalfields and industries of Greater Manchester with the rich limestone and gritstone quarries of Derbyshire.
Originally intended to extend further south towards Chapel Milton, the prohibitive cost of building a complex flight of locks led Outram to construct the six-mile Peak Forest Tramway instead. This horse-drawn plateway linked the quarries at Dove Holes directly to Bugsworth Basin.
- Limestone & Lime Kilns: The primary cargo handled at Bugsworth was limestone. Heavy horse-drawn tramway wagons brought raw stone down to the basin, where much of it was processed in massive limekilns to produce quicklime (burnt lime) for construction and agricultural soil sweetening.

The 37-Year Crusade (1968–2005)
In 1968, permission was granted to the Inland Waterways Protection Society (IWPS)—later renamed the Bugsworth Basin Heritage Trust (BBHT)—to begin restoring the derelict site. Over the course of nearly four decades, thousands of volunteer hours were poured into excavating hundreds of tonnes of silt, rebuilding dry-stone retaining walls, clearing overgrown tramway lines, and restoring historic structures.
Challenges with Clay Puddling and Re-Watering
Restoring an 18th-century basin for 21st-century powered narrowboats presented massive engineering hurdles. The original basin was sealed using traditional puddled clay. Early re-watering attempts in 1975, 1982, and 1999 resulted in water loss, as modern propeller wash eroded the historic clay lining and caused structural failures along the dry-stone walling.
It took a major £1.2 million joint restoration project between British Waterways and the IWPS—involving heavy structural sealing, delicate wall rebuilds, and environmental measures to protect local water vole colonies—to permanently stabilise the water levels. On Easter Saturday, March 26, 2005, Bugsworth Basin officially reopened to navigation, celebrated by a rally of 94 narrowboats.
3. Current State & Modern Challenges
While Bugsworth Basin remains a treasured destination for boaters, historians, and walkers, the site faces renewed preservation challenges.
Handover and Dissolution of the Heritage Trust
Following the completion of core restoration works, operational management of the basin reverted back to the national navigation authority, the Canal & River Trust (CRT). The Bugsworth Basin Heritage Trust (BBHT) was formally wound up in 2025, bringing an end to the historic trust that had guarded the basin since the 1960s.
Suspension of the Local Volunteer Task Force
In recent months, the localised volunteer sessions that routinely maintained the grounds—handling grass cutting and painting—were suspended by the Canal & River Trust. Without a hands-on, local task force actively managing daily upkeep, early signs of site neglect have begun to appear across the monument:
