Some truly amazing news just in:
Canal and River Trust have finally recruited a team of volunteers to cover the Basin and the main line of the Upper Peak Forest canal up to Swizzels Matlow (New Mills).
Great news the team are now undergoing induction!
Bugsworth Basin is set to get the care it deserves once again, though not without a difficult chapter. The volunteer scheme hit severe hurdles in recent months, the biggest being a black mold infestation in the workers’ cabins.
The recent volunteer team, whose hard work over the years remains deeply appreciated, apparently made it clear that a usable cabin was essential for them to continue. However, with no funds available for an immediate upgrade, volunteering stopped. When resources are genuinely fixed, rigid positions leave very little room for compromise, and regrettably, after many months, volunteering stayed on hiatus.
But some amazing news has just come in: a new multi-site volunteer force has been brought in to oversee a much larger stretch of the waterway. Taking on such an expansive section of the Upper Peak Forest Canal and Bugsworth Basin is a massive undertaking. Credit to the incoming team for taking the challenge to keep the basin moving forward.
I am sure the village and boaters are over the moon. We cant wait to see the basin come back to life.
