Welcome to Bugsworth Uncovered
Perched at the terminus of the Peak Forest Canal, Bugsworth wasn't built for scenic leisure—it was the vibrant, beating heart of one of England’s largest inland port systems.

The Grit & Graft of the Basin
For over a century, unrelenting manual labour powered the massive kilns lining the Black Brook. Workers breathed in caustic white dust to manufacture the quicklime that built and fed a rapidly expanding industrial nation. Day and night, horses hauled heavy limestone wagons down the iron rails of the Peak Forest Tramway. Look closely at the pathways today, and you can still find the stone sleeper blocks sitting exactly where they were laid over two centuries ago.
Although commercial trade collapsed under the weight of the railway age, forcing the basin into complete abandonment by the 1920s, the raw landscape still tells the story. Now officially mapped under the name Buxworth, this village stands as an unvarnished monument to industrial history.
